The city of Abilene, Texas, has shut down parts of its internal systems following a cyberattack that occurred on April 18, 2025, impacting internal servers. IT staff and cybersecurity experts are currently investigating the incident to assess the extent of the damage. Emergency services remain fully operational, and no financial irregularities have been reported so far.
The city stated, “On April 18, staff reported that some servers were unresponsive. We immediately activated our Incident Response Plan, disconnecting critical systems from the network to prevent further damage. Relevant agencies have been notified, and leading cybersecurity experts have been engaged to assist in the investigation.” Some systems remain offline for security reasons, but emergency services continue without interruption. Card payment systems at local government offices are currently unavailable, with payments accepted only via cash, checks, or online. The city has also announced a temporary suspension of utility disconnections for overdue accounts.
This incident comes amid a series of similar attacks across Texas, including a 2023 ransomware attack on the City of Dallas by the Royal group, which forced the city to shut down several IT systems to contain the threat. Other cities, such as Dallas County and Wichita County, have also previously been targeted in cyberattacks.
