On June 13, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a cybersecurity warning, citing an increased risk of domestic cyber threats in the wake of U.S. airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear infrastructure. The warning comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and Israel. DHS stated that pro-Iranian hacktivist groups and state-linked actors could launch retaliatory cyberattacks targeting U.S. critical infrastructure and networks.
The report also notes that Iran remains focused on retaliating against U.S. officials involved in the 2020 killing of Major General Qassim Soleimani. Should Iran’s religious leadership issue a formal fatwa for revenge, the U.S. may face both physical and cyber retaliation. DHS further emphasized that the rising anti-Israel and antisemitic sentiment within the U.S. could trigger future domestic incidents inspired by foreign narratives.
DHS reiterated that Iran possesses sufficient cyber capabilities to disrupt U.S. infrastructure, even if temporarily. Meanwhile, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has urged all critical infrastructure operators to heighten their vigilance, warning that cyber risk is expected to intensify by the hour as the Middle East conflict escalates.
