GreyNoise Labs, a cybersecurity threat intelligence company, has launched a new tool called “GreyNoise IP Check,” now available for the general public to use for free. The tool allows users to check whether their IP address is being used in malicious activities-such as botnets or residential proxies-without their knowledge. Over the past year, there has been a concerning rise in home networks being converted into exit nodes for cyberattacks, often due to users unintentionally installing malware-infected applications or browser extensions that silently turn their devices into tools for cybercriminals.

The GreyNoise IP Check tool is designed to be simple to use and privacy-friendly. By visiting the website, the system automatically scans the user’s IP and provides results in one of three categories:

  1. Clean – No malicious activity detected
  2. Malicious/Suspicious – Suspicious scanning or harmful behavior observed; users should immediately inspect devices on the network
  3. Common Business Service – The IP belongs to a VPN or corporate network, which is considered normal

A key feature of the tool is its ability to display a 90-day activity timeline if suspicious behavior is found. This helps users trace the issue back to when it started-such as the installation of a specific app or software. There is also a free JSON API available for more advanced users or system administrators.

If an IP is flagged as Malicious/Suspicious, experts recommend taking immediate remedial actions. Users should begin by scanning all devices on the network for malware, especially IoT devices such as routers and smart TVs, which are often overlooked. Other essential steps include updating device firmware, changing admin credentials, and disabling unnecessary remote access features. These measures help prevent devices from being misused as part of cyberattacks against others.
