Europol has announced the seizure of approximately $29 million worth of Bitcoin following the shutdown of “Cryptomixer,” a crypto-mixing service widely used to launder money and obscure financial trails linked to cybercrime. Since its launch in 2016, the platform is estimated to have mixed over €1.3 billion worth of Bitcoin.

The takedown was carried out between 24–28 November 2025 under “Operation Olympia,” a joint operation led by German and Swiss authorities with support from Europol and Eurojust. During the operation, law enforcement seized three servers in Switzerland, the cryptomixer[.]io domain, over 12 terabytes of data, and more than €25 million worth of Bitcoin. The platform was subsequently taken offline and replaced with a law enforcement seizure notice.

Cryptomixer operated on both the clear web and dark web, allowing users to deposit cryptocurrency into a pool before redistributing it as untraceable funds. While mixing services can be used for privacy purposes, Europol stated that Cryptomixer was heavily used to launder proceeds from criminal activities, including drug trafficking, ransomware, illegal goods trading, and crypto thefts.

It is estimated that more than 152,000 BTC passed through the service, with usage linked to multiple ransomware groups such as Zeppelin, SunCrypt, Mamba, Dharma, and LockBit. Authorities are also investigating whether funds stolen during a major crypto exchange outage in 2022 were laundered through the service.

Europol highlighted that the takedown of Cryptomixer marks another significant success in the international crackdown on crypto money laundering, following the shutdown of Chipmixer in 2023, and represents an ongoing effort to reduce global financial crime risks within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
