Microsoft has released out-of-band (OOB) updates for Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server to address two critical issues introduced by the January 2026 security updates. The first issue affects Microsoft 365 Cloud PC, Remote Desktop services, and Azure Virtual Desktop, where some users experience credential prompt failures, preventing them from authenticating and establishing remote desktop sessions.

The second issue specifically impacts Windows 11 version 23H2 on systems with Secure Launch enabled. Secure Launch relies on virtualization-based security (VBS) to protect systems from firmware-level threats during startup. Due to the bug, affected devices are unable to shut down or enter hibernation properly and instead automatically restart. The corresponding fixes-such as KB5077797, KB5077796, and related updates-are not distributed automatically via Windows Update. Administrators must manually download and install them through the Microsoft Update Catalog.

For organizations that are unable to deploy the out-of-band updates immediately, Microsoft recommends using Known Issue Rollback (KIR), which allows administrators to mitigate the issues via Group Policy deployment. If systems are not affected by these problems, installing the emergency updates may not be necessary, and administrators can wait for the fixes to be included in the next regular monthly update cycle.
