Google has revealed that Android 17 will introduce several new security and privacy features focused on device theft prevention, threat detection, and protection against phone scams involving financial fraud. One of the most notable additions is a new capability allowing Android devices to work directly with banking applications to verify the authenticity of incoming phone calls. If the system detects that a call is using spoofed caller ID information to impersonate a legitimate bank or financial institution, Android can automatically terminate the call to reduce the risk of victims being tricked into transferring money or disclosing sensitive account information.
Caller verification will operate through an application-level mechanism that compares incoming phone numbers against trusted datasets provided by participating banks. Google stated that this information is not intended for direct customer communication purposes. During the initial rollout, the feature will support banking and payment applications such as Revolut, Itaú Unibanco, and Nubank. Although the feature will debut alongside Android 17, Google noted that compatibility will extend to devices running Android 11 and later.
Android 17 also expands the capabilities of Live Threat Detection through Google Play Protect to identify additional malicious behaviors, including abuse of SMS forwarding features, hidden accessibility overlays, applications that conceal or change their icons, and suspicious background execution activity. Other new protections include scanning APK files downloaded through Chrome before installation, hiding one-time passwords (OTPs) from most applications for three hours, and introducing a “Mark as lost” feature that requires biometric authentication while restricting access to Quick Settings, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth once a device is flagged as lost.
