Japanese retailer Muji has announced the temporary suspension of its online store after logistics partner Askul Corporation suffered a ransomware attack. The incident disrupted Muji’s product delivery systems and impacted its main website, preventing customers from browsing or placing online orders, as well as checking their purchase history via the mobile app. The company is currently reviewing affected orders and contacting customers who made purchases prior to the disruption. Muji emphasized that its physical stores and international operations remain unaffected and continue to operate as normal.
Askul, an office supplies and logistics e-commerce subsidiary of Yahoo! Japan Corporation, confirmed that its website was compromised by ransomware. As a result, the company suspended order processing, product deliveries, and related services such as returns, invoice issuance, and customer support via phone and website. Askul stated that investigations are underway to determine the scope of the impact and assess whether personal data may have been compromised. Further updates will be provided once more details are confirmed.
The disruption affects only Muji’s operations in Japan and comes shortly after Japanese beer giant Asahi Group was hit by a Qilin ransomware attack, which forced it to halt production lines and delay new product launches. These incidents highlight the growing trend of ransomware campaigns targeting businesses in Japan.
